Public Holiday. On 20 May 1902, after 30 years of struggle, Cubans win the war of Independence from Spanish colonial rule. Before 1959 and Fidel Castro’s Revolution, 20th of May was officially celebrated as independence day.

Because the war of independence from the Spanish Crown ended with a North American military occupation of the Island, the date lost significance after the Revolution of 1959.
