Cayo Largo Highlights
The stunning tourist island of Cayo Largo, off the south coast of Cuba, is considered the best in Los Canarreos Archipelago. Legends mention Cayo Largo in tales of pirates’ feuds and hidden troves; supposedly, the ancient La Yana Tree was used as a guide to find hidden treasure. Perhaps though, the hidden treasure is the island itself...
Cayo Largo is a tiny, beautiful island which only started to be inhabited in the 1980s; the gentle developments, which include a few comfortable hotels, though, have not harmed its natural beauty. The kilometres of unspoilt beach, scattered palm trees and coconut trees will enable you to feel a little like Robinson Crusoe; here, it seems, you are far away from everything. However, this far away haven is easily reached by flight from Havana.
Scuba dive into the azure waters and uncover underwater caves and valleys, amazing coral formations and an array of tropical fish. It is not surprising that visitors enjoy many water-based activities, such as diving, fishing and sailing here. The sun-kissed shores also house native wildlife such as flamingos, iguanas, turtles and hummingbirds. Indeed, Cayo Largo's turtle observation programme is reputable. The sea turtles lay their eggs in the sands and thrive here.
Pretend to be a little like Robinson Crusoe here and enjoy being cast away from the demands of western cultures, though, obviously with a little more comfort and an occasional Mojito.
