A Day in the Countryside: Las Terrazas National Reserve
+ Soroa Botanical Gardens and Waterfall
The tour starts from the Rancho Curujey overlooking the lake where there will be an introduction to this unique biosphere reserve, one of the most important in Latin America.
The day follows with a drive into the hills to visit the immaculately restored former French coffee plantation buildings dating back to the 19th Century. Discover the fascinating history of Cuba’s coffee production an industry so closely linked to the slave trade and also admire the views across the reserve and over to the sea in the north.
Continuing the visit there will be time to explore the local lakeside village of Las Terrazas and meet some of the friendly local community. You can purchase a coffee at Maria’s coffee house so much better than Starbucks! Wander around the studio of the famous artist Lester Campa and visit the small pottery and handicraft stalls specialising in local handmade arts and crafts.
The more adventurous can pay a small supplement and embark on an exhilarating zip wire canopy tour through the tree tops and across the lake. Three long rides await with stunning views if you can keep your eyes open!
There will also be the chance to spend some time at the idyllic San Juan River where numerous pools allow the chance for a cooling swim in the clear waters or you can relax by the riverside and enjoy a few drinks at the local ‘ranchon’. The more active could take a walk further along the river banks and head towards the ruins of the La Victoria coffee plantations.
Lunch will be included during the day at one of the restaurants in the Reserve, specializing in local cuisine before we take the picturesque back roads to Soroa known as the “Rainbow of Cuba” due to the beauty and colours of the area! Visit the famous Orchidarium and botanical garden the largest in the Americas where up to 300 different species of Orchids can be found. Take a short trail through the tropical vegetation to the impressive Soroa waterfall, where there might be the chance to swim in the river.
Continuing the tour a visit will be made to the colonial country town of Candelaria, an opportunity to see a ‘real’ Cuban town away from the main tourist areas of Cuba. Wander through the streets of Candelaria and absorb the sights and sounds of a typical Cuban working town.
